Tent Pole Events: The Inaugural Access Tourism New Zealand Conference

"Dr Sandra Rhodda is succeeding at the proverbial process of "turning a battleship with her bare hands." Actually, if you look at a map, you might imagine her turning two of them at once -- both North Island and South -- as she converts New Zealand over to systematically including seniors and people with disabilities in tourism planning.

She brought us the inaugural Access Tourism New Zealand Conference at AUT University Auckland on October 4th, 2010). The conference was organized by the New Zealand Tourism Research Institute. More recently, in a first for New Zealand, The New Zealand Tourism Research Institute at Auckland University of Technology has created a Research Programme Area in Access Tourism headed by Dr Rhodda.

In what we hope is a regular event the Access Tourism New Zealand Conference joins the ranks of  Inclusive Tourism "Tent Pole Events."

"Tent Pole Events" is the phrase we are using to identify the many conferences springing up around the world that address Inclusive Tourism either directly or to a significant and sustained degree indirectly. The metaphor is to a tent being raised with supports scattered around the world. The tent is a space of welcome where those who have long promoted opportunities for travelers with disabilities collaborate with those who are now signing on for the journey to inclusion
