Accessible Playspaces**

We hear the term "universal design" a lot these days, but do we really know what that means when we are creating and redesigning accessible play and recreational environments?

In this presentation we will explore what these principles can really look like children's museums, playgrounds and recreational areas.  Through the use of photos and stories, the presenter will share practical applications of these 7 principles that can be seen in a variety of different play and recreational environments that exist around the country and beyond.  Many of these ideas are simpler that you might think.

Other areas of consideration in the environment will be discussed as well.  Concepts of design which would support a child with different sensory needs and cognitive skills will be explored.  These include considerations of colors, sounds, and layout as well as safety considerations like fencing and line of site.  Again, photo examples will show how others have incorporated simple ideas to create better access for all to play together.
