World Toilet Day

World Toilet Day is sponsored by the World Toilet Organization (WTO sic) on November 19. Yes, there are those who suggested a certain relevance to running this announcement on the day US voters are registering their referendum on the state of US governance but the campaign is actually serious and impressive in both its goals and achievements:

Sanitation is a problem that people are often shy to discuss. But a reluctance to talk about sanitation is part of the reason why an estimated 2.5 billion people worldwide do not have access to sanitation. WTO’s mission is to improve toilets and sanitation globally. We aim to achieve this through:

* Advocacy and Awareness: Breaking the taboo on toilet and sanitation to make it a mainstream subject for improvement
* World Toilet College: Capacity Building and Training to help people help themselves and others
* Offer Networking Platform and Knowledge Management Hub
* Building an Efficient Market Infrastructure for Sanitation
* Demonstration of Sanitation Projects
* Create Financing Tools through partnership with financial experts
* Events: e.g. World Toilet Summit, World Toilet Day 19 November

From the web site:

November 19 is World Toilet Day.

Theme for 2008: WE DESERVE BETTER

The theme encompasses 3 "WE"s

1. Toilets: World Toilet Organization has always been trying to make toilet a desirable object to discourage open defecation, and so WTO feels that toilets deserve better social status.

2. Cleaners: WTO aims to professionalize the sanitation and restroom industry and toilet cleaners deserve better pay, respect and prospects

3. 2.5 Billion Toilet-less People: The 2.5 billion toilet-less people around the world deserve better place to defecate --- a toilet

People should be constantly reminded of the seriousness of the situation. By obeserving this day worldwide we can raise public awareness on toilets both in the rural - urban settings and in less developed - developed countries.

We encourage all of you to participate in this year's celebration. If you have activities planned for the World Toilet Day, do share with us by email at and If you are thinking of activities for the day, still write to us as we can share with you many ideas to make this day special
