It's right on my doorstep but I had only ever gone past it in the car. And I often thought: hang on a minute, I must visit Hadrian's Wall. Yet during my years of competing as a disabled athlete, the last thing I ever wanted to do with my time off was travel. I just wanted to stay at home and relax. So we hadn't really been on any family holidays since my daughter Carys was born seven years ago. Hadrian's Wall, built by the Romans to deter the troublesome Picts, was the obvious choice. We started our adventure at Tynemouth on the East Coast and crossed the breadth of the country to pretty Ravenglass in Cumbria, staying in farmhouses along the way.
