Last year, the Legislature of the State of Oregon instructed the Oregon Construction Contractors Board to develop a list of accessible features that contractors may offer to clients when building or remodeling private residences. The complete list contains 60 items, including:

General accessibility features:

• No or low-profile thresholds
• All doors 3 feet wide; automatic door openers
• Minimum 42-inch hallway widths; shorter hallways
• Motion detector lighting inside and out; "task lighting" fixtures for better spot visibility
• Easy-to-reach electrical outlets
• Control switches no higher than 48 inches; use of rocker switches

Entry, garage, sidewalk:

• Garage door header height of 8 feet to accommodate van
• Low-maintenance landscaping
• Covered entryway and ice-resistant walkways

Kitchen:

• Slide-out shelves in lower cabinets and refrigerator
• Pull-out or drop-leaf shelves for work space
• Outlets and switches wired on cabinet fronts

Bathroom:

• Access toilet from either side
• Handheld shower wand; roll-in shower
• Telephone accessible from floor level, in case of fall

Laundry:

• Raised, front-loading washer and dryer
• Combination washer-dryer unit
• Room for wheelchair maneuvering

Bedroom:

• Built-in storage
• Oversized closet doors
• Main floor bedroom and bathroom placement
